Huizen started out as a fishing village on the Zuiderzee and now lies on the Gooimeer, on the northern edge of Het Gooi. In the 1970s and 1980s the village grew rapidly as a designated growth centre, so many of its more than 41,000 residents live in districts such as the Bijvanck, Huizermaat, Stad en Lande and the Zenderwijk. These areas have plenty of terraced and end-of-terrace homes with gardens, alongside apartments, which makes Huizen attractive to families who want to live in Het Gooi. In the Oude Dorp the narrow fishermen's houses and village homes are still easy to recognise, and in the Havengebied new waterfront apartments have been added in recent years. More spacious detached homes are mainly found on the edges, towards the Tafelberg and the Blaricummerheide. About six in ten homes are owner-occupied. The average sale price in 2025 was around €615,000, noticeably lower than in Bussum, Naarden or Laren. Huizen has no railway station, but buses run to Hilversum, Bussum and Amsterdam, and the A1 motorway is a few minutes' drive away. The town centre has a full range of shops, and along the Gooimeer you will find marinas, small beaches and walking paths.
