Lelystad is the capital of Flevoland and one of the youngest cities in the Netherlands: the first residents arrived in 1967, on land that had been seabed only shortly before. Named after engineer Cornelis Lely, the city has almost 86,000 residents and a spacious layout with lots of greenery, water and separate cycle paths. Districts such as the Atolwijk, Bolder and the Waterwijk consist mainly of single-family homes from the 1970s and 1980s, the Boswijk borders the woods, and in the Hollandse Hout villa park people live in detached homes among the trees. In the Warande, the newest expansion district, construction is still in full swing. About six in ten homes are owner-occupied. With an average sale price of around €425,000 in 2025, Lelystad is below the national average, and for that budget you often get more living space and a larger garden than in the Randstad. The intercity on the Hanzelijn takes you to Amsterdam Centraal in about forty minutes and to Zwolle in under half an hour, and the A6 motorway runs past the city. The Stadshart has a full range of shops, Batavia Stad and Batavialand draw visitors from across the country, and the Oostvaardersplassen and the Markermeer are close by.
